The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) in KwaZulu-Natal condemned the department of education for deducting teachers' salaries twice because of the public sector strike. It said the action constituted an act of sabotage against educators that could jeopardise the smooth running of the 2008 academic year.
The KZN education department says it will not be deducting from teacher salaries over December and January after a request by educators. However the education spokesperson, Christi Naude, says deductions will be made this month and February 2007.
She says the department is expected to have concluded with payments and deductions for this financial year before the start of a new one.
