Ina Cronje, the MEC for education in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), has appealed to all educators in the province to return to work on Monday. Speaking during a media briefing in Durban, Cronje said teaching and learning at schools had not been taking place for the past 10 days due to the public sector strike.
She says her request is not intended to undermine the educators' right to engage in peaceful industrial action, but to ensure that learners do not become victims of a situation which is beyond their control.
"The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa reminds us that the best interest of our children is of paramount importance in everything we do. Our young people represent the future of our country. It is in this spirit that we appeal to our principals and educators to make it possible for us to reopen our schools with effect from Monday," said Cronje.
Earlier this week, teacher unions were divided over the latest wage increase of 7.25%, suggested by independent mediators. While Sadtu and Naptosa have rejected it, the Suid-Afrikaanse Onderwysersunie (SAOU) says the total package is acceptable. Teachers in the public and private sector were urged to join the strike action, as Sadtu and Naptosa remain steadfast on 10% demand.
