Department of environmental affairs inspectors seized thousands of shark fins destined for export to the Far East at Cape Town harbour last night. The haul constitutes the largest amount of shark fin ever confiscated in this country.
Inspectors swooped on traders after a tip-off and found more than 1 500kgs of shark fins. While it is not illegal to process the delicacy, traders need an export permit. Initial investigations revealed that the traders, who are of Chinese origin, do not have the valid permits.
The fins are used in soups in China, where the delicacy fetches up to R634 a kilogram.
