Man dies in cash in transit heist in Free State

August 08, 2008, 17:00

A motorist has died after he was shot in the neck during a cash in transit heist outside Bloemfontein this morning. Seven security guards were injured.

Meanwhile four suspects have since been arrested near Soutpan on the road between Bloemfontein and Bultfontein.

A motorist who was caught up in the cross-fire was airlifted to a Bloemfontein hospital. He later died of his wounds. Other motorists were forced off the road by the same robbers.

Motorists were encouraged to use alternative routes between Bloemfontein and Kimberley. The road was closed for six hours. The early arrest of suspects is being attributed to quick response from joint security forces busy with a simulation exercise for the 2010 Soccer World Cup at the Tempe Military Base in Bloemfontein.
