Tough times for foreign nationals in SA
|
May 17, 2008, 16:00
Three people have died from injuries sustained during xenophobic attacks in Thokoza on the East Rand. Area councillor, Londi Nkosi says they were part of a group which needed medical attention following attacks against foreigners.
Police say relative calm has returned to the area. Xenophobic attacks began in Alexandra six days ago and have since spread to Diepsloot, Midrand and several east Rand townships.
Meanwhile, the SACP has called on South Africans to treat all foreigners with respect. Central Committee member, Gwebs Ngconde was addressing protesters against xenophobia and rising food prices outside parliament.
In the meantime, in KwaZulu-Natal, traditional leaders and the Amakhosi have called for calm after the latest xenophobic attacks on the East Rand. Several foreigners have been attacked by locals at Thokoza, Tembisa, Rabie Ridge and Boksburg. Chief Khayelihle Mathaba of the Emacambini clan on the KZN north coast says they are heading to the trouble spots to help solve the tense situation. He has called on Africans to treat each other with dignity.
