An Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) councillor was gunned down at his home near Dundee in northern KwaZulu-Natal, police said today.
Police spokesperson Shooz Magudulela said 73-year-old Peter Nxele was shot four times in the chest after alighting from his car shortly after 7pm last night.
Three men were seen running away from the crime scene. Magudulela declined to comment on the motive for the shooting of the Endumeni municipal councillor.
Nothing was apparently taken from Nxele and his killers left behind his wallet as well as a can of cold drink on the roof of the car.
Nxele's revolver was still in its holster on his body. It is believed that Nxele, had, at a recent IFP party meeting, listed names of people implicated in corruption within the municipality.
He had in the past raised the issue of a R50 000 municipal grant for local co-operatives that allegedly disappeared last year.
Honest, loyal and hardworking councillor
Deputy Mayor Anthony Raubenheimer expressed his outrage and said Nxele had been "an honest, loyal and hardworking councillor".
Police confirmed a reward of up to R100 000 was being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction. - Sapa
