Two people were killed and more than 50 injured in Alexandra
|
May 13, 2008, 06:00
An unconfirmed number of people fleeing from xenophobic attacks have been robbed of their belongings and cash at a youth centre in Alexandra Township, north-east of Johannesburg. The foreign nationals were sheltered at the local youth centre and the local police station to escape attacks.
Meanwhile, in the past two days a building has been set alight and a number of vehicles destroyed. Attacks on foreign nationals left two people dead and more than 50 injured. Police spokesperson Neria Malefetse says two people have been arrested in connection with the robbery at the centre.
One Alexandra resident, who did not want to be named, said they will continue with the violence as they want to get rid of all the foreigners. "These people take our houses and jobs, we do not want these people here".
