Orange Farm calm after unrest

May 12, 2008, 18:45

Calm has returned to Orange Farm township in the Vaal Rand after this morning's violent protest.

Residents of Drisy earlier barricaded the Golden Highway protesting against poor service delivery.

Police spokesperson Maria Mazibuko says the protestors barricaded the road with huge stones, poles and burning tyres. Police informed the residents that their gathering was unlawful and they needed to disperse.

"Residents refused and started to throw stones at the police. Police responded by using rubber bullets to disperse residents."

Mazibuko says five people, including a 10-year-old, sustained minor injuries from the bullets. Two women aged about 40 were arrested and would be charged with holding an unlawful gathering and failure to disperse when instructed. – Additional reporting by Sapa
