ANC secretary in Alexandra, Pule Phalatse, has condemned xenophobic attacks in that township. One person has been killed and more than 50 injured in the attacks.

The residents of Alexandra say they do not want any more illegal immigrants. They say the foreigners rob them on the street when they go to work and when they return from work.

Police could not specify the nationality of all the victims, but said most foreigners living in Alexandra were from Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

Meanwhile, the foreigners are seeking refuge at local police stations. About 500 police have been deployed to patrol the area. Phalatse says community leaders are scheduled for a meeting to discuss the situation.
