Police arrested 76 people in a crime prevention operation over the weekend in East London

Police arrested 76 people in a crime prevention operation over the weekend in East London, Eastern Cape police said today. Superintendent Mtati Tana said the operation was held in the central business district.

A 16-year-old male youth was arrested for the murder of a 29-year-old man from KwaMashu township. The case was reported in Fort Grey yesterday. The operation also led to the arrest of one person for attempted murder, four for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, five for burglary, ten for theft and two for warrant of arrest in a theft case.

Five shebeen owners were arrested for selling liquor without a licence, 42 people were arrested for being drunk and disorderly in public, two were arrested for drunken driving, three for shoplifting, two for malicious damage to property and one for loitering. Most of those arrested would appear before the East London Magistrate's Court on Monday, said Tana.

Uitenhage man held for rape
An 18-year-old man has been arrested for rape in Ramaphosa Village near Uitenhage, Eastern Cape police said today. Spokesperson Superintendent Priscilla Naidu said a 63-year-old woman was raped in her bedroom yesterday at 4am.

He stabbed, overpowered and raped her, and afterwards he fell asleep on the bed. The woman escaped and called for help. A passing police van was flagged down and the incident was reported to them. Police found him fast asleep on the bed, and he was arrested and was due to appear in court on Monday, Naidu said.

Eastern Cape teenager stabbed with an animal horn, raped
A 19-year-old teenager was stabbed with an animal horn, then raped in the early hours of Saturday in Kareedouw, Eastern Cape police said today. "The teenager was walking home from a local tavern when at about 1.30am she as accosted by an unknown male who had followed her," said police spokesperson Priscilla Naidu.

"He stabbed her twice in her shoulder before dragging her into the bushes between Kagiso Heights and Mountain View and raping her. "It's alleged that the victim was stabbed with the sharp horn of an animal," said Naidu. No arrests had been made.

Men rob security guard of cash box
Seven men robbed a Protea Coin Security guard of a cash box in Humansdorp and fled with a large amount of cash, Eastern Cape police said today. Superintendent Priscilla Naidu said the security guard had gone to the Trade Value store in Humansdorp yesterday to collect money.

When he exited the store the security guard was held at gunpoint by seven men, of whom three were armed. The men took the cash box and his firearm before jumping into a bakkie and fleeing. The driver of the security van gave chase. One of the men in the bakkie fired a shot at the driver but failed to hit him. The men then fled into the Kwanozamo township near Humansdorp.

Police were investigating a case of armed robbery. No arrests have been made, said Naidu. - Sapa
