Three accused in RAF fraud case appear in court

May 07, 2008, 12:45

Three doctors accused of defrauding the Road Accident Fund of R4 million, have appeared in the Durban Regional Court. They are part of a group of eight people who've been charged with more than 200 counts of fraud, relating to RAF claims.

The State says between 2000 and 2002, the suspects ran a company whose main aim was to prepare and lodge false claims with the accident fund. The doctors are accused of compiling medical reports that accompanied the claims. They are alleged to have failed to medically examine any of the claimants.

The State claims that none of the people who claimed money from the fund had sustained injuries and were not entitled to compensation. One of the doctors has now turned State witness. The suspects also face charges of racketeering.

The matter has been postponed to March 9 of next year.
