Witnesses shed light on Ngombane's murder

Noby Ngombane, the murdered Free State official

Ngombane was shot and killed at his house in Bloemfontein, March 2005

May 06, 2008, 10:15

Three police officials from Pretoria are expected to testify today in the murder inquest of former political adviser to the Free State Premier, Noby Ngombane at the Bloemfontein High Court. Ngombane was shot and killed at his house in Bloemfontein, March 2005.

Giving evidence in the inquest into Ngombane's murder a neighbour of the Ngombane's, Brenda Potgieter, told the court that she heard what sounded like three gunshots on the night that he was killed. She said that as she went outside to investigate, she saw a red vehicle with a man behind the wheel speeding past her. She then assumed the car belonged to Ngombane's wife, Nokwanda. Seconds later Potgieter saw another vehicle also speeding by.

Another witness Nkosiyabo Njari of the Serious and Violent Crimes Unit testified yesterday. Njari told the court that Bongani Mlambo, a brother to Noby's wife, was reluctant to give a statement on the night of the murder. He described this as strange.
