A 30-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Cape High Court today for the rape and attempted murder of a seven-year-old girl. Abraham James entered into a plea bargain and admitted guilt on three charges.
Community members from Delft protested outside the court today at what should have been the start of the trial of James. In November 2006, James lured the girl out of sight; raped her, hit her with a rock against the head, stabbed her with a knife and then threw her into a fire at Kleinvlei in the Kuilsriver area.
The community was elated at his admission of guilt, but feel stronger sentences should be imposed. The girl’s mother appealed to the public not to trust anyone with their children. The accused was a family friend.
After the incident the girl became known as Little Rock for surviving the horrible ordeal.
James will serve at least 28 years behind bars.
