The Nyandeni Local Municipal council in the Eastern Cape has suspended two of its senior managers for three months with full pay over allegations of fraud and corruption.
The two allegedly defrauded the municipality of hundreds of thousands of rands. Municipal Manager, Tshaka Hlazo and Lawrence Mabila are accused of paying themselves 13th cheques and performance bonuses twice last year.
They were exposed by an internal auditor after they failed to produce supporting documents to verify their salary increases. The audit report, a copy of which the SABC has in its possession, has revealed that the officials have effectively increased their salaries by 6%, contrary to SALGA remuneration policy.
The Nyandeni municipal internal auditor has been appointed acting Municipal Manager.
