500 arrested in Noord Street taxi rank raid

Police say this will not be the last raid on the taxi rank and surrounding areas

Approximately 500 people have been arrested at the Noord Street Taxi rank and surrounding areas this morning. The charges included being in possession of drugs and unlicensed firearms. Several illegal immigrants were also arrested.

More than 20 taxis were also impounded from the rank for not being roadworthy. Police say this will not be the last raid on the taxi rank and surrounding areas.

The Noord Street Taxi rank is infamous for the miniskirt incident. This attack on Nwabisa Ngcukana was the reason for the major joint operation between SAPS and Metro police, Gautrans. People have laid complaints of intimation, sexual assault and even rape at the taxi rank.

Police say they are trying to rid the area of criminal elements to make it safer for commuters.
