Over 100 people were arrested in the Johannesburg CBD in a crime combating operation
|
March 14, 2008, 09:45
Over one hundred people were arrested yesterday and today in the Johannesburg CBD in a crime combating operation, police said. "One hundred and sixty eight people were arrested in the past 48 hours," police captain Bheki Mavundla said early this morning.
During the operation a 21-year-old Zimbabwean national was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm. This was after police conducted a random search of a house in Berea yesterday. The man was found in possession of a pistol with six rounds of ammunition and various bank cards that were allegedly stolen using the same firearm, said Mavundla.
Police also arrested people for possession of drugs, fraud and other minor crimes. They were all expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court later today. - Sapa
