A taxi operator has been gunned down and a female passenger injured in New Germany, near Pinetown in KwaZulu-Natal. Police spokesperson, Solomon Mbhele, says the man, believed to be affiliated to the Kwadabeka Taxi Association, and a female companion were sitting in a car when they were attacked by unknown gunmen.
Mbhele says they suspect the shooting may be related to the ongoing taxi feud in the area. He says no arrests have been made at this stage.
Meanwhile more than 500 taxi operators from Capricorn District Taxi Council in Limpopo have marched to the office of the Transport MEC in Polokwane. They handed over a memorandum complaining about operating licenses.
They have accused the department of failing to issue taxi operators with temporary operating licenses. The taxi council says this often leads taxi operators getting licenses illegally.
A representative from the MEC's office accepted the memorandum and has promised to look into the matter.
