Tony Yengeni was arrested for alleged drunken driving in November 2007
|
March 11, 2008, 16:00
The suspended police chief at the centre of the Tony Yengeni controversy faces possible expulsion tomorrow. Today, Siphiwo Hewana was found guilty on six charges related to his tampering with due process in Yengeni's arrest.
Hewana arrived today to hear the verdict, after being suspended for three months without pay. He has been accused of covering up for Yengeni after his arrest on drunken driving charges in November last year.
Police said Hewana had ordered junior officers to change the time of Yengeni's arrest.
Yengeni is on parole after serving time in jail for fraud. He is expected in court on March 19 to face charges of drunken driving. However, if Hewana is expelled tomorrow, it would bring an end to a career of 27 years in the police force.
Hewana's lawyer, who did not want to appear on camera, has confirmed that his client has been found guilty on all charges. He is expected to be sentenced tomorrow.
