Yengeni was arrested on a charge of drunken driving last November
|
March 11, 2008, 14:45
The suspended station commander of the Goodwood police station near Cape Town, Siphiwo Hewana, has been found guilty on all six charges levelled against him.
Hewana is the police officer at the centre of the controversy relating to the arrest of former ANC Chief Whip Tony Yengeni for drunken driving in November last year.
Hewana emerged from the four-hour tribunal sitting today and refused to comment comprehensively on the verdict. However, his lawyer Emsiel Meyer confirmed the ruling against him.
Meyer indicated that they would possibly appeal the guilty verdict tomorrow when the tribunal resumes to hand down the sentence. Hewana faces possible dismissal from the police service.
The allegations of tampering with the time of Yengeni's arrest are part of the reasons he landed in hot water. Meanwhile, Yengeni is expected to appear in court next Wednesday on the drunken driving charges.
