Johannesburg Metro Police arrested more than 200 people over the weekend. Spokesperson Bhekizizwe Mavundla says the crime combat operation began on Friday and ended on Monday morning.
The operation, held jointly by the department of safety and security, environmental health services and the liquor board, took place in Hillbrow, Braamfontein, Berea and Joubert Park.
Mavundla says: "Arrests were made on charges of drug dealing, robbery, fraud, assault and theft. A number of hotels and taverns were raided, closed and their licences suspended due to non-compliance with liquor regulations."
Those arrested were expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court and Hillbrow Magistrate's Court on Monday. – Sapa
