Ngcukwana was apparently attacked for wearing a miniskirt at a taxi rank

March 10, 2008, 09:30
Gauteng Community Safety MEC Firoz Cachalia says he will soon meet representatives of protest groups and taxi associations to discuss the incident in which a woman was attacked by taxi drivers at the Noord Street taxi rank in Johannesburg. Cachalia is confident that the culprits will be arrested.
Ncwabisi Ngcukwana, 25, was apparently attacked because she was wearing a miniskirt three weeks ago. Police have been trying to get taxi bosses to handover the culprits since the attack happened.
The Gauteng Safety authorities have threatened to close down the taxi rank today if the taxi community does not hand over the culprits to the police.
Meanwhile the secretary-general of the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco), Phillip Taibosch, says they are determined to ensure that the perpetrators are arrested. "The taxi operators are working very closely with the police on this matter. We want to see the culprits arrested."
