The woman at the centre of the miniskirt row Nwabisa Ngcukana 25
|
March 08, 2008, 18:15
The woman at the centre of the miniskirt row has spoken out for the first time about her ordeal. Two weeks ago Nwabisa Ngcukana (25) was allegedly attacked by a group of taxi-drivers and street hawkers, who said she was indecently dressed.
The mini skirt made famous in the 60's ...... is a style of dress women still enjoy wearing today, but little did Nwabisa Ngukana know that wearing one would be an ordeal. In spite of her experience Ngcukana says she won't be a victim.
This past week she was one of hundreds of women who marched in protest to the Noord taxi rank. But the four men who allegedly sexually assaulted Ngcukana are still on the run.
Noord taxi rank threatened with closure
The Gauteng Safety authorities have threatened to close down the taxi rank on Monday if the taxi community does not hand over the culprits to the police.
Meanwhile, two young women have had to flee a taxi rank in Limpopo because they were wearing mini skirts. Police say the two were chased away from the Malamulele taxi rank. They say a crowd of men shouted obscenities at the women and asked them to undress.
The women managed to find refuge inside a tent used as a barber shop.
