Taxi council promises to comply with ultimatum

March 07, 2008, 16:00

The South African National Taxi Council has promised to comply with Gauteng government's ultimatum to bring to book the drivers who assaulted a 25-year old woman for wearing a miniskirt at Johannesburg's Noord street taxi rank last month.

Yesterday, the Provincial Portfolio Committee on Community Safety threatened to close down the rank if taxi bosses did not point out the drivers by Sunday. Santaco met with the Gender Commission and the Progressive Women's Movement over the issue in Johannesburg today.

Meanwhile Santaco's secretary general, Phillip Taaibos says he will apologise personally to the victim, Nwabisi Ngcukana. Ngcukana accused taxi drivers and hawkers of stripping her naked and parading her at the rank.
