Angry mob tries to overturn police van

March 07, 2008, 12:30

A crowd of about a 1 000 people tried to overturn police vans ferrying suspects to the Pinetown Magistrates court near Durban. The protesters had gathered for the trial of five men accused of gang raping a 21-year-old woman from Hillcrest.

The woman was raped in a sugarcane plantation on Sunday, while her father was held at gunpoint. The two had been fishing at a local dam, when they were accosted by seven men. Five suspects were arrested and they appeared in court yesterday where they were denied bail.

This angered the protesters as they were expecting the accused to appear in court today. They then moved to the Hillcrest police station where the men are believed to be held.
