Police investigations show that the assault of women wearing short skirts at taxi ranks have been going on for the past eight years. Gauteng Assistant Commissioner, Simon Mpembe, says however last month's incident was the first formal complaint they have received.
A 25 year old woman has accused taxi drivers and hawkers at the Noord Taxi Rank in downtown Johannesburg of tearing off her clothes because she was wearing a mini skirt. Mpembe says a new strategy is on the cards to rid taxi ranks of crime.
Meanwhile, Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Firoz Cachalia, says taxi drivers need to be educated to change their attitudes towards women.
Cachalia held workshops with the National Taxi Alliance (NTA) and various women's groups, following the assault. Cachalia says the only way to prevent such incidents from happening in the future, is to teach them how women should be treated.
