The Gauteng Department of Community Safety says plans to counter abuse at taxi ranks would be discussed in due course. This was decided after an assault on a woman, allegedly by taxi drivers, for wearing a miniskirt, was committed on Sunday.
Department spokesperson Dumisani Ngema said the department would be organising a workshop within two weeks to come up with a plan of action to prevent such incidents in the future. This decision came after Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Firoz Cachalia met with representatives from local government, taxi associations, women's movements, legal organisations, the South African Human Rights Commission and police officials.
They were meeting to discuss the incident, whereby Nwabisa Ngcukana, 25, was reportedly assaulted when taxi drivers and hawkers at the Johannesburg's Noord Street taxi rank tore off her clothes to cheers from a crowd, who said she was being taught a lesson for wearing a miniskirt.
Cachalia said: "There was complete agreement that the perpetrators of this and other similar incidents had to be identified and subject to the full might of the law."
Today, two taxi organisations apologised for the assault on Ngcukana, allegedly by taxi drivers, and said they were committed to helping to find the men. Police spokesperson Cheryl Engelbrecht said investigations were continuing to find the assailants, but nobody had been arrested. - Sapa
