The accused teenager in the shooting case of four people in Skielik in the North-West last month is expected to make an application to undergo a mental observation.
Eighteen-year-old Johan Nel was arrested after allegedly using his father's rifle and opening fire at an informal settlement near Swartruggens. Nel is facing four counts of murder and nine attempted murder. Other charges might be added on. The killings were not only condemned, but also described as a racist attack on the black community of Skielik.
On his last appearance two weeks ago the situation got out of control when protesters blockaded the court gate and asked police to hand Nel over to them. Today the community is expected again pack the court and protest outside.
A large police contingency will oversee the demonstrations to avoid clashes similar to those that occurred during Nel's last appearance.
