Hewana was suspended for allegedly giving conflicting time during Yengeni's drunk and driving arrest

February 05, 2008, 12:15
Suspended Goodwood police station commander Siphiwo Hewana's four-day internal disciplinary hearing got underway in Cape Town today. Hewana arrived in Foreshore earlier accompanied by a Popcru official.
The commander was suspended without pay in December last year for allegedly giving conflicting times for former Chief Whip Tony Yengeni's arrest. He allegedly instructed junior officers to advance the time of Yengeni's arrest by three hours.
He is facing charges of contravening the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act, and for Intimidation and obstruction of justice.
Yengeni was under correctional supervision after serving prison time for fraud when he was arrested for drunken driving in November.
Yengeni will make his first appearance on the charge at the Goodwood Magistrate's Court on March 19.
