Police investigate Kruger Park shooting scene

January 04, 2008, 06:15

Senior police investigators from the office of Limpopo Police Commissioner Calvin Sengani have visited the scene of a disputed fatal shooting incident near the Kruger National Park's northern Phafuri gate.

Two men in a bakkie were shot dead by game rangers from the Makuleke community, who alleged they were poachers. A third man in the bakkie, Sunday Mpofu, was shot and wounded.

The rangers' manager, Jack Greeff, maintains the alleged poachers shot at the rangers first. The surviving victim, Mpofu, denies this. Police say about 70 spent cartridges were found on the scene. The cartridges came from firearms used by both the rangers and the alleged poachers.

Mpofu, who was shot in the right hand, left leg and left arm, is recovering well in hospital. The two deceased, Albert Machete and Colbert Mavundadavhi will be buried in a joint funeral service at Masisi village tomorrow.
