Police brutality case investigated

Krugersdorp police are accused of heavy-handedness

A pregnant woman has alleged that she was pushed by police

January 03, 2008, 09:45

West Rand police are investigating charges laid by community members at the Krugersdorp police station, accusing officers of police brutality.

They claim that ordinary New Year's eve celebrations turned into what they termed a 'one-sided police brute fest'. The residents say the police charged unprovoked into a crowd of partygoers at the Rustenburg Weg Resort.

One member of the group - a pregnant woman - has alleged that she was pushed by the police. Freedom Front Plus MP, Pieter Groenewald, says the police used excessive force against innocent people.

However the police have rejected the allegations of heavy-handedness, and also deny they refused to take down statements against the police.
