Police clamp down on vehicle smugglers

December 25, 2007, 16:00

More than 40 people have been arrested at the Lebombo Border post in Mpumalanga for allegedly attempting to smuggle stolen vehicles into Mozambique. Police have already recovered 40 stolen cars at the border post since the beginning of the festive season.

The confiscated vehicles are being stored at a police compound near Komatipoort.

Police spokesperson, Mike Mhlanga, says they are working with the Vehicles Identification Unit, which assisted in the seizure of the vehicles. Mhlanga says the number of recovered stolen vehicles at the border post is slightly higher than last year's this time, and he expects the number to increase as the festive season draws to an end.

Police say most cars seized were from Gauteng, warning that smugglers take advantage of the festive season rush.

Meanwhile more than 200 impounded cars are still unclaimed at the compound near the boarder post.
