Yengeni cop drags boss to court

Former ANC Chief Whip Tony Yengeni

Yengeni was arrested on a charge of drunken driving last November

December 08, 2007, 18:45

The police officer at the centre of Tony Yengeni's drunken-driving arrest wants to take his bosses to court. Senior Superintendent Siphiwo Hewana has been suspended without pay.

Hewana's cast doubt on the exact time of the arrest, which is crucial for a court-case. Blood has to be drawn within 2 hours of an arrest. It normally takes 24-hours, to analyse blood samples. However because of the backlog, Yengeni's results won't be available, before March.

He is due to appear in court that month, on the drunken driving charges. If found guilty he will be in breach of his parole conditions.

Meanwhile, SAPS bosses say a criminal investigation and disciplinary hearings, are pending against Hewana.
