The South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) is expected to seek an urgent interdict in the Cape Town labour court today against the City of Cape Town's disciplinary process involving 117 metro police officers. The officers have been suspended and called to appear before a disciplinary tribunal.
This after they blockaded the N2 highway in August in protest against the staff restructuring process. They face charges ranging from illegal protests to carrying fire arms while not on duty. The presiding officer, Anton Steenkamp, yesterday refused to conduct oral evidence or call witnesses during proceedings.
He has chosen to rely on video material and affidavits as evidence. Samwu is opposing this.
