The DA in Gauteng and the province's department of health have condemned the rape of a medical student at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto.
The student had apparently been sent late on Monday night to fetch samples at the blood bank about a kilometre away. She was raped on the way.
Jack Bloom, the DA spokesperson for health, says it is unacceptable that students should be unsafe in their work environment. He has blamed lax security and bad working conditions for the incident.
Arthur Manning, the Hospital CEO, says security is being reviewed by experts. The department of health says the student has received support and counselling.
