Union calls for suspension of McBride

The Ekurhuleni metro police chief Robert McBride

July 20, 2007, 16:30

The SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) in the East Rand says Duma Nkosi, the Ekurhuleni mayor, has to provide leadership and suspend Robert McBride, his metro police chief.

McBride appeared in the Pretoria Regional Court on charges of drunken driving, fraud and defeating the ends of justice. McBride was involved in a car accident late last year in Centurion, returning from a work Christmas function. He was granted bail of R1 000.

Kwena Ramotlou, the Samwu spokesperson, says the allegations against McBride have tarnished the image of Ekurhuleni and lowered morale. “It is time that the executive mayor provided leadership and suspends him on the basis of the embarrassment. The allegations have… tarnished the image of the municipality… We have other people who were charged with other charges and were suspended to allow them to focus on their criminal charges,” said Ramotlou.
