McBride's case on hold amid missing evidence

June 05, 2007, 17:00

Robert McBride, the Ekurhuleni metro police boss, will soon know his fate. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says McBride's case is on hold until all evidence is collected. However, it says as soon as the South African Police Services has all the new evidence, action will be taken.

The NPA had handed over the docket to the SAPS last week, after new so-called whistle blowers surfaced. It is now believed the three metro cops who allegedly covered up McBride's damning car accident last December have decided to expose McBride.

McBride crashed his car in Centurion, after leaving a Metro Police end-of-year function. Witnesses said he appeared drunk and disorientated, but the three men appeared on the scene immediately. They allegedly threatened witnesses, and bundled him into their car to whisk him away. No blood alcohol tests were ever taken from McBride, who later claimed to not remember the accident.

McBride to be sued
The three men are believed to be angered by McBride's alleged decision to ban them from entering Ekurhuleni police stations. Saleem Ebrahim, the attorney for the men, says they are now taking steps to sue McBride for R1.5 million each.

Police are still keeping mum on the information revealed by the three men. The NPA has not denied that it may help them prosecute McBride.
