McBride's fate to be decided end of June

Robert McBride, the Ekurhuleni metro police chief

June 01, 2007, 07:00

Robert McBride, the Ekurhuleni metro police chief, will know by the end of this month if he will face a charge of drunken driving.

McBride rolled his car on the R51 near Centurion on December 21 2006. Reports earlier this week said three officers who had attended the accident scene, allegedly made statements to police which contradicted McBride's version of events. Witnesses at the scene alleged that he was clearly drunk and that they had been assaulted and threatened by metro police officers.

Panyaza Lesufi, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, says the case has been dragging on for far too long. He says the docket is still with the police.
