The trial of a couple who allegedly defrauded the Road Accident Fund (RAF) of R1.7 million has been postponed. A clerk of the Potchefstroom Magistrate's court says that Shaun and Renita Meintjies will appear again on August 22.
They are out on bail of R5000 each. The couple faces more than 50 charges relating to fraudulent claims. The RAF alleges that the couple operated in a syndicate headed by Marius Potgieter, currently serving 12 years in prison for fraud against the fund.
"The continued efforts of our staff in stamping out fraud and corruption are central in bringing the claimant back to the centre of all operations of the organisation," said Thokozani Magwaza, the acting RAF chief executive.
Earlier this week Edward Coetzee, another Potchefstroom RAF claimant, was sentenced to seven years in prison on fraud charges against the fund. The ten charges brought against him amounted to about R237 400. - Sapa
