Zuma to appear in court today

For president, Jacob Zuma
Reading Time: < 1 minute

Former President Jacob Zuma is expected to appear in the Durban High Court on Friday, facing 16 counts of fraud, money laundering and racketeering.

Zuma’s supporters braved chilly weather last night for a vigil held at Albert Park in Durban ahead of his court appearance.

Supporters from various parts of Kwa-Zulu Natal and other provinces were dressed in ANC colours.

Zuma’s charges emanate from the multi-million rand arms deal procurement, in which he is alleged to have received a bribe in order to influence the tender process.

The night vigil kicked off with a motorcade which paraded through the CBD.

Carl Niehaus of the MK Military Veteran’s Association maintains the charges against Zuma are politically motivated.

“We feel that someone with an illustrious liberation career such as comrade Jacob Zuma deserves our support as a comrade, and also deserves our support because we believe that these charges that have been ingrained against him for now over 15 years are politically motivated.  And that a liberate atmosphere had been created over years of verification of comrade Jacob Zuma, which will make it impossible for him to receive a free and fair trial.”
