Former President Jacob Zuma has emphasised on the importance of investing in education. Zuma was addressing the Children’s Christmas party held in Nkandla, in northern KwaZulu Natal.

Zuma announced free education at African National Congress’s national elective conference in Nasrec in 2017.

Joy was written on the faces of children from KwaNxamala area in Nkandla who were receiving their Christmas gifts from former President Zuma.

The Christmas party is held annually by the Jacob Zuma Foundation. The day was a hive of activity with children accompanied by their parents to receive Christmas goodies.

But the usually star-studded event paled in comparison to previous years. It used to be attended by celebrities and Members of Parliament but hosted mainly locals this year.

The event was historically held in huge marquees with several music artists performing for the children. However this year, it was held in a local high school hall with fewer people in attendance.

Children were showered with gifts including stationery and school shoes. The young children say they are happy to have received gifts.

Meanwhile, some parents were also given groceries. They say the food they received will make a difference to their families.

Zuma says his foundation The Jacob Zuma Education Trust still needs support to be able to help the needy.

The trust has paid tuition fees for young people from poor backgrounds in rural areas. The former President concedes that the work done by the foundation is under financial strain.
