The Mangosuthu University of Technology student who was allegedly shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend is being laid to rest at her homestead in Mpaphala at Eshowe, in northern KwaZulu Natal today.

First year Quantity Surveying student – Zolile Khumalo – was allegedly killed at her residence room earlier this month by her boyfriend Thabani Mzolo. Mzolo has been charged with murder.

There was a sombre mood as thousands came to pay their last respects to Khumalo who was a first year quantity surveying student. Her funeral was attended by politicians, students and family members.

Zolile was allegedly shot several times by her boyfriend who suspected she was cheating on him.

Her family wants justice and says her killing has left them traumatised.

On Thursday Zolile’s killer appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court and he was denied bail. Hundreds of students protested at court and called for him to remain in jail.

High-ranking government and African National Congress (ANC) officials also attended the court proceedings.

Khumalo’s peers say the university should prioritise safety at the institution.

Authorities at the university say a commission of inquiry has been established to look into the killing. A report is expected to be released sometime next week.

The Democratic Alliance (DA), official opposition in the province, has called on government to implement stricter gun control laws.

Khumalo’s alleged killer is due back in court on the 17th of May.
