Zim’s political turmoil to be main focus at SADC meeting

The unfolding political turmoil in Zimbabwe will come under sharp focus when SADC leaders meet in Angola on Tuesday.

The summit of troika plus the SADC chairperson is hosted by Angola president Joao Laurenco, who is the chairperson of regional organ on politics, defence and security.

It comes in the backdrop of Sunday night’s much anticipated address by President Mugabe to Zimbabweans.

It was largely expected that Mugabe would announce his resignation as head of state following an ultimatum by his Zanu-PF party which has also removed him as its leader.

The summit is expected to be yet another test on whether the regional body will overcome perceptions that it remains a toothless institution.

Angola, Zambia and Tanzania as well as SADC chairperson President Jacob Zuma will take part in discussions which could possibly mark a new era for Zimbabwe following President Mugabe’s 37 years rule.
