Zimbabwe turmoil tops SADC meeting

The unfolding political turmoil in Zimbabwe will be discussed at the highest level when SADC leaders, including President Jacob Zuma, meet in Angola on Tuesday.

The summit of troika is hosted by Angolan President Joao Laurenco who is the chairperson of regional organ on politics, defence and security.

The summit is expected to be yet another test on whether the regional body will overcome perceptions that it remains a toothless institution.

Angola, Zambia, Tanzania and South Africa will take part in discussions which could possibly mark a new era for Zimbabwe following President Robert Mugabe’s 37 years rule.

Meanwhile, Zanu-PF in Parliament is expected to start impeachment proceedings against Mugabe on Tuesday if he persists in refusing to resign.

The party’s chief whip, Lovemore Matuke, has accused Mugabe of gross violation of the Constitution.

Matuke says apart from issues around Zanu-PF structures, the President gave too much power to his wife Grace.

He says, “Factions were delegated to the wife, the wife was now busy firing and hiring ministers. That is a violation of the Constitution.”
