Zimbabwe army calls for calm

The Zimbabwe Defence Force has called on citizens to remain calm around the capital Harare.

On Tuesday, there were scenes of army tanks in the country’s capital.

The Defence Force Army General, Constantino Chiwenga issued a statement on Monday, saying they military would not hesitate to safeguard the revolution against the purging of freedom fighters.

However, an unnamed army general Wednesday morning has issued another statement saying they will crack down on unruly elements.

“We wish to assure the nation that his Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, comrade RJ Mugabe and is family are safe and sound. We are only targeting criminals around him who are committing crimes that are causing social and economic suffering in the country. We urge you to remain calm and limit unnecessary movement. However, we encourage those who are employed and those who with essential business in the city to continue their normal activities as usual.”
