Zille urges govt to address youth unemployment

Western Cape Premier Helen Zille has urged government to take rapid steps to create jobs for the unemployed youth. Zille was speaking at an event in Cape Town to commemorate Africa Day. According to StatsSA, a third of South Africans aged between 15 and 24 are unemployed, with young people being the majority of the total number of those without work.

Zille says a large young population is a double-edged sword… “Which can be an enormous benefit but also an enormous liability if people do not have hope, prospects, education and opportunities. In Africa, we are going to have a very large percentage of young people – we already do – by 2050, a much larger percentage. Our challenge will be to ensure that they have real opportunities and hope”
