Zambian opposition leader to know his fate on Wednesday

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Zambian opposition leader Haikande Hichilema will know on Wednesday whether he will be charged with treason or his case will be thrown out by the Zambian Court.

Hichilema’s lawyers have called his charges as ambiguous.

He and five of his political lieutenants were charged for their role in the Mongu motorcade incident. This is when they refused to give way to President Edgar Lungu’s motorcade as it passed through Mongu.

Now a new scenario a plan to overthrow the President last year is being mooted.

Last week Hichilema’s lawyers asked the court to throw out the case citing vague and ambiguous state charges.

Magistrate Greenwell Malumani postponed the matter until Wednesday saying the matters raised were a bit complex and needed time to be studied.

Hichilema’s arrest raised political tensions in Zambia.

In another development President Lungu is reported to be considering declaring a state of emergency in areas hit by protests.
