Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Northern Cape government has expressed shock and sadness at the passing of the leader of the !XUN  San community at Platfontein near Kimberley.

Mario Mahongo died in a car crash on Saturday night. Northern Cape Premier Sylvia Lucas says they have lost a man who believed and fought for equal rights for the Khoisan people.

“For him being of these people was very important especially because they had to adapt in South Africa. He knew that his people could not go through that phase but he was willing to facilitate that for us as the government and for us as the people of the province. We really hope his death will bring the group together.”

Other traditional leaders are praising the leader of the !XUN  San community at Platfontein near Kimberley, Mario Mahongo. Chief of the national house of the Griquas, Barend Van Wyk says Mahongo will be remembered for his efforts of uniting the Khoisan Community.

“He was a staunch leader promoting the rights of the San people, the !XUN and the Khwe. We have lost a great leader because by now we need to go forth without him. I would have liked he should have seen when we enter into freedom”

Mahongo’s granddaughter, Osia Mahongo says it will be hard to forget the 66-year-old leader and pastor.

“It is very sad to lose your grandfather like that, just suddenly. I remember him in the church when he’s standing around with us and singing with us, we must sing for him, I will always remember that, I will never forget.”
