Women urged to say No to abuse

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Human rights and gender activist Pregs Govender has encouraged women to love themselves and stand up for the truth.

Govender says women have been abused for what they believe in and discouraged not to stand up for themselves.

She has been speaking at an inaugural memorial lecture for Fezeka Khuzwayo known as Kwezi. Fezeka, who died in 2016, accused former president Jacob Zuma of rape.

Zuma was acquitted and Fezeka went into exile.

Govender says Fezeka was betrayed for her being a loving person.

“When somebody is full of love and gives their love freely; walks into the world without fear and is open to life, those who don’t work from love; who work from hate and fear and greed, misconstrue that love. (They) think that love is there to be manipulated and to be destroyed. Our dignity can be undermined because of our race, our class and our agenda, our sexual orientation and our geographic location.”
