Women take stand against gender-based violence

Reading Time: < 1 minute

At the start of Women’s Month, hundreds of women in Cape Town have come out in support of awareness against gender-based violence and an increase in the number of femicides in the country.

The women are set to make their way to Parliament as part of a national march organised by the #TotalShutdown movement.

One of the marchers, Valencia Orgill, says she is taking a stand against gender-based violence.

“Women can be away from home. They can be away from their desks. Women can stand up for themselves. I think today is going to make men realise that women have got power on their own. They are not ornaments of the male figure.”

Meanwhile, #TotalShutdown says it will not be holding marches in the Northern Cape as it could not obtain a permit.
