Women still face challenges in formal sectors

Reading Time: 2 minutes

There are a number of challenges that woman face in the work-place that hinders South Africa towards moving into a non-racial, non-sexist country. This is according to TS Global consultants Managing Director Tshephiso Masenya. Masenya says the transition from informal to formal sectors for woman remains a problem, “You have got challenges where a lot of the woman participating in especially the formal sectors remain unaccounted for, they are not recognised in their struggles, they are not seen in their struggle to transition from informal to formal sectors.” Masenya adds that many disparities continue to marginalize women from participation in the economy. The severe under representation of women in various economic sectors and in decision making positions in the private sector demonstrates the need for urgent intervention to improve the status of women in our society. Masenya’s comments come as South Africa gears up to mark Woman’s Day on August 9th and the focus will once again fall on gender equality and women economic empowerment. Women’s Day in South Africa, a public holiday that pays homage to the women of our nation, the mothers, the wives, the sisters and the daughters who fought tirelessly against the tyranny of the Apartheid government.
